FAQ

What is the difference between MD5 and SHA-256?
MD5 outputs 128 bits (32 hex characters) and is fast, but collision vulnerabilities have been proven, so it is not suitable for security purposes; SHA-256 outputs 256 bits (64 characters), is more secure, and is commonly used for file integrity checks and digital signatures.
Is hashing encryption? Can the original be recovered?
No, and no. Hashing is a one-way digest algorithm that turns arbitrary-length input into a fixed-length string; changing even one character of the input completely changes the result. It is used to verify integrity — you cannot reverse it back to the original.
Can I use it to verify a downloaded file has not been tampered with?
Yes. Software release pages usually publish the SHA-256 of the installer; hash your downloaded file with this tool and, if it matches the official value, the file has not been tampered with or corrupted.
Is my text or file uploaded when computing hashes?
No. All computation happens locally in your browser; neither text nor files are sent to any server.
